Cost of a house in small towns around Austin

Ever wonder what a house costs in one of the small towns outside of Austin? Maybe you live in Austin and have gotten priced out because of the ever increasing home prices in town, or maybe you want to move to Austin but can’t quite afford to buy. No matter what the case is you are in luck, because there are several small towns less than an hour from Austin that are equal parts affordable and charming.

Taylor

Taylor has been in the headlines a lot lately, thanks to tech giant Samsung’s announcement that they will be building a factory in Taylor. Real estate prices in town are going up as expected due to the announcement but good news is it’s still much more affordable than Austin. Bastrop

Bastrop is just a short drive from Austin, and an even shorter drive to the Austin Bergstrom airport for those that travel a lot. It also has one of the more charming historic downtowns and thanks to several Austin expats a growing culinary scene. The historic homes here are some of my favorite. Lockhart

Of course you can’t talk about small towns without mentioning Lockhart. It’s been on everyone’s list for years thanks to some of the best barbecue in Texas, but for me it’s the city town center that really get’s me. The downtown architecture tells a story of boom years. Those days are gone now, but things are looking up for the small town as more and more Austinites move there and bring there passion and creativity to the small town. Georgetown

I don’t know if you can exactly call Georgetown a small town, but it’s certainly smaller than Austin. The houses in Georgetown are more affordable than Austin, but I wouldn't go so far as to call them cheap. The town has all the conveniences you’d expect in a medium sized town and it’s just a quick bop from the “big city”. You can see all my favorite houses that have been for sale in Georgetown here.

Elgin

Elgin is similar in size to Bastrop, and while much of the housing is newer suburbs it does have it’s fair share of historic homes as well. Downtown you’ll find a few quaint blocks of historic commercial building and that up and coming spirit of a small town growing. There are plans to connect Elgin to Austin via train in the future which could be a game changer for the town. You can see all my favorite houses that have been for sale in Elgin here.
